Wind Symphony
Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course the student will have:
1. Demonstrated continued technical improvement in his/her performance medium.
2. Performed a repertoire of all types of musical literature.
3. Demonstrated the ability to work together cooperatively toward a common goal.
4. Demonstrated correct care and maintenance of his/her instrument and
equipment.
5. Developed an awareness of the value of music in society.
6. Participated in various types of co-curricular performing ensembles.
7. Been introduced to career possibilities and potential in the areas of
professional, educational and commercial music.
Course Requirements
The student will:
1. Perform required music satisfactorily on his/her instrument to conform to
standards set by the instructor.
2. Attend all classes and announced rehearsals.
3. Participate in all performances.
4. Maintain all equipment (private and Department-owned) in proper condition.
5. Participate in a cooperative and productive manner.
6. Participate in Marching Band (or alternate performance assignment if
sufficient reason is given that the student cannot participate in Marching
Band).
Concert Band
Objectives

Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course the student will have learned the
following skills:
1. Correct care and maintenance of his/her instrument.
2. Proper tone production.
3. Basic skills in performance.
4. Knowledge of keys and rhythms.
5. Ability to read music artistically and technically.
6. Introduction to music career possibilities and potentials.
Course Requirements
The student will:
1. Attend at least two twenty-minute lessons per week with the instructor.
2. Attend four twenty-minute practice sessions during school hours in available
periods per week.
3. Practice at least four twenty-minute practice sessions at home per week.
4. Maintain equipment in proper condition.
Concert Strings, String Orchestra
Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course the student will have:
1. Demonstrated continued technical improvement on his/her instrument, both
technically and musically.
2. Performed a repertoire of various musical genres and styles.
3. Improved sight reading ability.
4. Demonstrated the ability to work together cooperatively towards a common
goal.
5. Improved listening skills necessary for a developing musician.
6. Improved and expanded his/her understanding and awareness of the rudiments of
music.
7. Acquired an awareness of music history and musical trends through the
literature performed.
8. Been introduced to career possibilities and potential in the areas of
professional, educational, and commercial music.
Course Requirements
The student will:
1. Perform required music satisfactorily on one’s instrument to conform to
standards determined by various means of evaluation.
2. Promptly attend all classes as well as all required rehearsals.
3. Participate in all performances.
4. Maintain and care for all school equipment, including instrument, music, and
folder.
5. Satisfactorily complete all non-instrumental assignments.
6. Conform to all school and class conduct rules whether in class or in
outside-of-class situations.
Concert Choir
Objectives
1. Perform in scheduled concerts throughout the year.
2. Increase knowledge of the techniques of singing such as proper vocal
production, breathing, posture, diction and pronunciation.
3. Increase knowledge of music through use of computers, using programs which
strengthen ear training with intervals, rhythmic dictation and notation.
4. Learn solfege.
5. Experience, through singing, a variety of musical styles and eras.
6. Improve sight reading ability.
7. Increase memorization ability, evaluated through vocal quizzes given before
each scheduled concert.
8. Receive information concerning career choices in the field of music.
Course Requirements

2. Memorize all music as required.
3. Attend all rehearsals, including those scheduled during lunch, after school
or in the evening prior to a performance.
4. Wear the appropriate dress for concerts.
5. Properly care for music.
6. Attend all scheduled sectionals as necessary.
7. Take vocal tests during the prescribed time limitations so as to avoid an F.
8. Complete an end-of-the-year evaluative singing project.
9. Conform to all school and class conduct rules, whether in class or in
outside-of-class situations.
Freshman Chorus

Music Theory and Harmony
Semester Course
Goals and Requirements
The following items will be taught:
1. Basic music vocabulary
2. Meter and rhythm
3. Pitch notation
4. Intervals
5. Scales
6. Chords, inversions and cadences
7. The harmonization of melodies
a. Non harmonic tones
b. Four part writing of chords in all positions
c. Articulations
d. Dynamics
** Students will use a variety of resources to enhance their knowledge. They
will learn basic piano skills in order to demonstrate many of the subjects
listed above. The computer program Finale will be used for compositions written
by the students. Regular homework assignments, quizzes and tests will be used to
evaluate each student’s progress.
